The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in
Umuahia, on Monday, has nullified the election of Senator Enyinnaya
Abaribe of the PDP citing irregularities in two local government areas.
Delivering the judgement, the lead judge stated that the election
of Senator Abaribe was inconclusive due to irregularities in two local
government areas, namely Obingwa and Ugwunagbo.
This comes as a result of a petition by the All Progressive Grand
Alliance (APGA) candidate, Chris Nkwonta seeking nullification of
Abaribe's election on the grounds of electoral malpractice and
irregularities.
Abaribe, a three-term senator who was first elected to represent
Abia-South Senatorial District in 2007 said his team were still confused
about the ruling and have applied for a certified true copy of the
judgement to be given to them so as to determine the next legal line of
action.
Also in Enugu, the National Assembly Election Tribunal, led by
Justice M.O Adewara, nullified the election of Gilbert Nnaji of the PDP.
Nnaji who was elected in April to represent Enugu East Senatorial
District. Chimaroke Nnamani of the Peoples Democratic Change had gone to
the tribunal seeking nullification of Nnaji's election on the basis of
election malpractice and irregularities.
In the light of this, The Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) will be required to conduct fresh elections in the affected
areas within 90 days.
