US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, made the disclosure in Abuja at the signing of agreements between the US government and this year’s beneficiaries of the Ambassador’s Grants scheme.
Economic Boost
According to the Ambassador, the US government inaugurated the support scheme to enable communities become self-reliant and also enable them grow economically for the betterment of the society.
“For over two decades, the US Ambassador’s Small Grants Programme has partnered with local Non-Governmental Organisations throughout Nigeria, funding small community-based development projects,” he stated.
Ambassador Entwistle announced
that 35 community based organisations are benefitting from this year’s scheme and that they were carefully selected across 20 states of Nigeria.
Conscious responsibility
He said the Programme, also known as Ambassador’s Small Grants Programme, was part of America’s plan to enhance the living standards of Nigerians.
“As a partner, the United States wants Nigeria to thrive. Our direct assistance to improve basic economic and social conditions promotes a conscious responsibility to lift up society. Some funding will benefit communities affected by HIV/AIDS by addressing economic, nutritional and hygienic needs,” the Ambassador said.
The groups got various amounts, depending on their capacity, totaling $250,000.
The money is to be used for developmental programmes such as the construction of classrooms, health clinics, boreholes, laboratory and carpentry equipment amongst others.
The beneficiaries, who pledged judicious use of the funds, said they wer impressed with the gesture. They called on all foreign embassies in Nigeria to emulate the US embassy.
