Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi
The Senate will today, Tuesday, October 20, take a stand on the
case of the former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who is one
of the ministerial candidates sent to the Senate by President Muhammadu
Buhari for screening and confirmation.
He was among the first batch of the 21 nominees sent to the Senate
by the President on September 30 for confirmation, however, while the
rest other first batch nominees were screened and confirmed by the
Senate, the former Rivers State governor had his screening postponed
twice.
The postponement was caused by the petition written against Amaechi
by a Rivers State-based anti corruption group, 'The Integrity Group,'
which accused Amaechi of financial fraud to the tune of N70 billion
while in office as the state governor.
It is expected that the Senate would consider the report and adopt
it first before continuing with the screening of the remaining nominees.
Besides Amaechi, the Senate could not also screen Barrister Adebayo
Shittu (Oyo State nominee) who was also among the first batch of the
nominees.
