2yrs after Iyayi’s death, ASUU tasks Buhari on 2009 agreement

Prof. Fetus Iyayi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed displeasure that two years after its former President, Professor Festus Iyayi was killed by a government convoy in Kogi State, the Federal Government was yet to fully implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement.
Iyayi, a former ASUU President was killed on November 12, 2013, in an auto-crash with convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, while on his way to attend an emergency ASUU meeting to suspend the six-month old ASUU strike in 2013.
The Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU,
Professor Segun Ajiboye in a release entitled “Iyayi Must Not Die In Vain” said it was saddening that since 2013 when ASUU suspended the strike, universities were yet to get any intervention fund asides the initial N200 billion released in 2013 out of the N1.3 trillion intervention agreement signed with the union, adding that nothing was injected in 2014 and 2015.
The academic union therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to pay the outstanding intervention fund of N1.3 trillion, earned academic allowances and commence renegotiation of the agreement.
He said: “Festus Iyayi fought for the masses and lived an exemplary life. We are calling on the new Minister of Education and President Buhari to ensure that children of the poor have access to qualitative education. The Minister must ensure the full implementation of the 2009 agreement. The National Assembly to drive the change in the country by voting 26percent of the budget on Education. Iyayi’s dream for Education in Nigeria must not die.”
