Int’l Institute Of Marine Surveying CEO To Visit Nigeria

The chief executive officer of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS), based in the United Kingdom, Mr Mike Schwarz, is set to visit Nigeria this month. Schwarz’s visit is part of activities marking the First Annual Lecture and General Meeting of the Centre for Marine Survey, Nigeria.

This was contained in a press statement from the Centre for Marine Surveying Nigeria and Schwarz, according to the statement, will feature as guest speaker at the centre’s annual lecture and general meeting.
He is expected to deliver a lecture centred on the integrity and objectivity required for marine survey reports on November 27, 2015, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Complex, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to the statement signed by the centre’s president and chairman, Board of Trustees, Mr Adebambo Ademiluyi, the thrust of Schwarz’s lecture will be on what the Nigerian energy and maritime sectors should do to harness their full human potentials in the area of marine surveying.
“Focus will also be on the importance of marine surveyors in the oil and gas sectors as Nigeria is having excess under-utilised human capacity while foreigners are given preference for marine survey jobs. Our nationals could do better. Dominance of foreigners in a sphere where we have capacity as Nigerians negates the spirit of the Nigerian Content Act and the Coastal and Inland Shipping Act (Cabotage) 2007,” he stated.
For the first time, the Nigerian energy and maritime sectors will be focusing on the importance of marine survey practice as a stand alone profession that can contribute to national economic growth and increased development of the nation’s human capital.
Expected to grace the occasion are chief executives of government parastatals in the maritime and energy sectors, top executives of banks and oil trading companies, the society of petroleum, marine engineers and master mariners. Also expected to participate in the event are members of the Guild of Marine Surveyors and many other industry stakeholders.
The Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria, which provides a platform for self regulation amongst professionals, was established in 2011 and registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act in July 2012.
