Okada Rider Escapes Death In Lagos After Container Falls On His Motorcycle

A young commercial motorcycle operator, popularly called okada rider, yesterday cheated death when a container truck fell down crushing his motorcycle at the Mile 2 area of the Oshodi Apapa Expressway by Second Rainbow bus stop.

The truck, with registration number, KTU 177 XN, carrying a loaded container was coming from the seaport in Apapa when it fell on its side with the container landing on the motorcycle. The rider was said to have been lucky to have quickly jumped off from the motorcycle on sighting the danger coming within a few seconds.
Earlier in the week, another container accident happened along Apapa Oshodi Expressway at Ilasa, with the container falling on a Toyota Hiace bus.
Also, on November 5, 2015, the same road saw another truck accident at the Toyota bus stop near Oshodi.
The Lagos State Government had in a bid to curb truck incidents on the city’s busy roads, enacted a law, barring trucks from entering Lagos in the day time and restricting their movement to night time when the roads are less busy.
But truck operators’ associations have come against the implementation of the law using industrial actions and blaming the government for not providing truck parks.
A witness at the accident scene at Second Rainbow bus stop, who identified himself simply as Aliyu, said the okada operator, whom he said was his brother was “so lucky to have fled speedily but got his okada crushed.”
“I was not here when it happened, but I came to see this. As you can see, my brother’s okada is there. You can see it there. We just thank God,” he said.
