A 73-year-old man from LaSalle, Que., has been charged in
connection with a crash in Whitby that left four people dead, including
two children.
The crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the westbound lanes of Highway 401, just east of Lake Ridge Road. In the end, 21 vehicles were involved in the incident, including three commercial transport trucks.
Three people – Carl and Jacqueline Laws from Pickering and Jesus Alberto Duran-Florez – were declared dead at the scene. A 10-year-old boy, CuauhtĂ©moc Duran-Florez, was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Eleven other people were transported to nearby hospitals with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Police at the scene said a transport truck failed to slow down in a construction zone, which caused a chain reaction involving the other vehicles.
“It appears that one of the transport trucks was travelling westbound and as traffic began to slow in front of it due to construction this vehicle did not slow down and continued right into the back of traffic,” said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
On Monday, the OPP announced that Mohinder Signh Saini has been charged with four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death in the incident, and 11 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
Saini is in custody pending a bail hearing in Oshawa.
