The Senate, on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the Goodluck Jonathan administration over the alleged misuse of funds meant for the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
The
upper legislative chamber further asked Buhari to ensure that his
predecessor’s administration gives account of how the funds were spent.
The motion for the probe was sponsored by Senator Babajide Omoworare and adopted by the Senate.
SURE-P
was established by Jonathan in January 2012 to channel the government’s
share of the savings gotten from the removal of fuel subsidy, to
infrastructural development.
Following the Senate’s directive, Buhari has scrapped the programme and sacked its managing committee.
The president also ordered a complete winding down of SURE-P’s operations by November 30.
