You could almost hear the mic drop. And you’ve certainly seen the gifs.
At his inauguration, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to a
reporter’s question about gender representation in his cabinet – a 50
per cent male/female split – with the now-iconic phrase, “because it’s
2015.”
Now these immortal words are available on a T-shirt, “free” to anyone who donates $100 or more to the Liberal Party.
Trudeau’s comments last week made headlines around the world, with mentions in the New York Times, Newsweek, Slate, the NBC Nightly News website and various other U.S. news organizations.
Newsweek cited a United Nations study to note that with Trudeau’s gender-equal cabinet Canada will now rank No. 4 in the world in terms of percentage of women in ministerial positions, tied with France and Liechtenstein. It was previously in 20th place, according to the UN Women report; Finland is No. 1.
The feminist U.S. website Jezebel’s piece on Trudeau’s cabinet was headlined: “The sexiest thing about Justin Trudeau is his cabinet’s gender parity.”
