The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has filled and submitted his nomination form, reports say.
Bello’s completion of the form means that the party has concluded on its choice of candidate, despite the controversy caused by his nomination, The Nation reports.
The governorship candidate’s form and letter of nomination were said to have been sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Friday, November 27, 2015.
“We are in receipt of many petitions but it is already late for anybody because we have nominated Yahaya Bello as the party’s substitute for Prince Abubakar Audu,” an APC source told The Nation.
“As a matter of fact, we gave the nomination form to Bello to fill on Friday and we have duly submitted all relevant documents to INEC. You can direct further enquiries to INEC and Bello, who is now our candidate,” the source added.
One of Bello’s aides, who was not named, also confirmed the submission of the form.
“It is true that our principal has filled the governorship nomination form as presented to him by APC and we are aware that the form has been submitted,” the aide said.
The APC was forced to nominate a replacement candidate after the death of its original choice, Abubakar Audu on Sunday, November 22 after the initial polls on November 21.
Audu was in the lead before his death and INEC’s declaration that the polls werek inconclusive.
The late candidate’s son, Mohammed was initially billed to replace him but Bello was named the party’s choice at the last minute.
Audu’s running mate, James Faleke has been chosen to run alongside Bello, but is insisting that he should be declared winner of the polls.
Meanwhile, APC leader, Bola Tinubu is said to have rejected Bello’s nomination and is reportedly throwing his weight behind Faleke.
The supplementary polls to decide the new Kogi governor will hold on December 5.
