Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and partners
from South Korea will embark on “Free Cataract Operation” for not less than 120
patients in Lagos State.
Nine medical
doctors, nurses and opticians from Korea and consultants in LASUTH will also
carry out free examinations and treatment for 250 patients during the week.
The head of
ophthalmology department of LASUTH, Dr. Modupe Idris, said the project is part
of the state governments’ effort at making health services available to
Lagosians from best hands and at no cost, if possible.
Idris, while
speaking on the reason for the partnership, said the Koreans are highly revered
professionals in the area of cataract operation.
She said,
“These professional ophthalmologists are experts who have chosen Nigeria and
Lagos in particular to observe their community service in the area of cataract
operation for 150 people.
“About 250
Lagosians also shall be treated and examined during this period and it will be
a great boost to Lagos State health services delivery, as promised by the Lagos
State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to his people.”
Coordinator of
the South Korean team for this project, Cho Hong Seon noted that they are,
indeed, happy to put this plan in motion with LASUTH and Lagos State government
for the people of Lagos and Nigeria.
Describing this
as a kind gesture, Mr Seon, who is also the president of the Association of
Korean community in Nigeria, said he is optimistic that this effort will
promote and increase mutual understanding and goodwill between Nigeria and
Korea.
