Saraki Compensates Ex-govs, PDP With Juicy Committees...See Names of Newly Appointed Chairmen

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday unveiled the names of the chairmen for the Senate's new standing committee. 

 

From the appointments, it was learnt that the Senate President on Wednesday, November 4, rewarded former governors and senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who engineered his emergence with juicy committees.
Out of the 65 committees unveiled at the end of yesterday’s sitting, APC got 41 while the PDP had 24. The number of committees was increased from 57 to 65 by the Saraki led Senate.
 
An analysis shows that former governors and PDP senators got most of the committees considered as ‘juicy or Grade A’ by members of the upper chamber.
 
The name of former Senate President David Mark was however missing from the list.
 
APC’s preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency, Ahmad Lawan, got the chairmanship of the Defence committee. Lawan chaired the public accounts committee in the seventh Senate. Senator Ahmad Sani Yarima, who moved the motion for Saraki’s emergence, got the chairmanship of Marine Transport committee while Dino Melaye, who seconded it, was rewarded with the chairmanship of the committee on Federal Character Territory (FCT). 
 
Former governors that got chairmanship of committees are Abdullahi Adamu (Agriculture), George Akume (Army),Danjuma Goje (Appropriations), Adamu Aliero (Customs, Excise and Tariff), Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Ecology and Climate change), Aliyu Wammako (Basic and Secondary Education), Sam Egwu (Industry) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (National Planning and Economic Affairs). T. A. Orji is the only former governor that is not heading any committee.
 
PDP senators that were rewarded with juicy committees include Uche Ekwunife (Downstream Petroleum), John Owan Enoh (Finance), Bassey Albert Akpan (Gas), James Manager (Power), Joshua Dariye (Solid Minerals), and Ben Murray Bruce (Privatisation). Others are Hope Uzodimmma (Aviation), Duro Samuel Faseyi (Airforce), Andy Uba (Public Accounts), Gilbert Nnaji (Communications), Olaka Johnson Nwogu (Environment) and Peter Nwaboshi (Niger Delta).
 
Senators, whosupported Ahmed Lawan’s bid for the senate presidency, got committees considered to be less juicy. They include Abu Ibrahim (Police Affairs), wife of APC leader Oluremi Tinubu (Women Affairs), Barnabas Gemade (Housing), Kabiru Marafa (National Identity and National Population), while Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi got the Vice chairmanship of the Federal Character and Inter Governmental Affairs.

The senate president urged the senators to intensify effort at discharging their duties. He said membership of the committees will be announced in due course.
