Trending: McDonald's forces Toronto restaurant to change its name

Don’t mess with big business.
That’s what one Toronto restaurant learned when it went up against global fast-food giant McDonald’s.
According to BlogTO, the Korean restaurant McRamyun’s — located at the corner of Baldwin and McCaul streets — was recently required to change its name to Mo’Ramyun after intellectual property lawyers at McDonald’s came after them.

“Basically, the legal representatives of McDonald’s sent us a letter back in May saying they own the trademark of the prefix ‘Mc’ and ‘Mac’ before any food item,” Amy Kim said in a statement to BlogTO. “Because of the costs and time associated with changing the actual registered name (for government and license registration purposes), we initially told them we would remove the use of Mc in public facing documents, but would keep the registered name as is.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t satisfy the massive burger chain, who gave the restaurant until Aug. 31 to change their signage and Oct. 31 to change the government-registered name.
The owners, Connie and Harry Kim, managed to meet those deadlines, and officially re-branded their restaurant Mo’Ramyun by Nov. 1.
McRamyun’s … er, Mo’Ramyun originally opened in the spring, taking over the space formerly occupied by Yakitori Bar.
Perhaps if they didn’t go with McDonald’s colours on their signs, too …
